Chemists work in the public service in government monitoring offices, in the environmental authorities at federal, state and local level and in many other areas such as the fire service and customs offices.

The spectrum of their activities is correspondingly diverse. It ranges from pure research activities, work in laboratories and scientific administration to consulting, evaluation and monitoring activities.

The declared aim of the working group, which was founded in March 1994 and elevated to the rank of a GDCh specialist group in December 2004, is the

• Strengthening the position of the chemist in the authority in cooperation with lawyers, engineers, etc.
• Information forum to increase professional expertise
• Education and public relations work through professional participation in current social discussions on chemistry-related topics
• Quality assurance of advice to politicians and administrators on (environmental) policy decisions
• Promotion of training courses in natural sciences and)political decisions
• Promotion of training courses in natural sciences and technology with a focus on chemistry
• Information about fields of activity in the public sector
• Promotion of young chemists through an active dialogue beyond the technical boundaries of studies
• Support for the compatibility of family and career
• Promotion of equal opportunities, esp. for management positions

The work of public service chemists places them directly at the interface between business, science and society. In addition to their chemical expertise, they require extensive knowledge of legal regulations and socio-political backgrounds.

They participate in the public debate to objectify publicly relevant issues, acting as a neutral and objective link.

The chemists in the public sector would therefore like to thank all colleagues
