The Division Water Chemistry Society of the German Chemical Society (GDCh) has been awarding the Water Chemistry Society Prize at its annual conference WATER since 1971, provided that the candidates are worthy of the prize. The prize recognises outstanding scientific achievements by young scientists in the field of water chemistry and is awarded to people who completed their doctorates no more than ten years ago. The award includes an award certificate and prize money of 3000 euros sponsored by the Walter-Kölle-Stiftung.The award is decided by all unbiased members of the Executive Board of the Wasserchemische Gesellschaft.

Originally established under the name "Fachgruppenpreis", the award has been known as the "Preis der Wasserchemischen Gesellschaft - gefördert durch die Walter-Kölle-Stiftung" since 2011.
